WTS Softball Crew cruises to
the 2007 ASA Women’s Class C
West Slow Pitch title

 

Oklahoma City---WTS Softball Crew of Lancaster, Calif., went undefeated at the 2007 ASA Women’s Class C West Slow Pitch National Championship in Salem, Ore., to earn a spot in the Hooters Championship Series at the ASA National Champion from the west. WTS had a few close calls on their way to the title but in the end posted a perfect 5-0 record.

 

WTS came out smoking in their opening game outscoring TLC of Bozeman, Mt., 16-6, to advance into the second round. Softball Soul of Beaverton, Ore., provided the first test of the championship for WTS but the eventual champs passed with flying colors by posting a 9-8 victory to earn a spot in the winner’s bracket semi-finals.

 

In the winner’s bracket semi-finals, WTS tangled with Lil’ Sumthin’ Sumthin’ of Santa Rosa, Calif., and came away with an 11-5 win to take one step closer to earning the title.

 

The Lugnuts of Columbia, Mo., who won the Women’s Class C West National Championship in 2003 to advance to the Hooters Championship Series, also had their sights on the title after advancing to the winner’s bracket finals with a perfect 3-0 record.

 

The winner’s bracket final developed in to a defensive battle as both teams struggled to get their offense rolling but WTS managed to get the winning run across in a 4-3 win.

 

After being sent to the loser’s bracket Softball Soul won five consecutive games to earn a rematch with WTS in the finals. In the championship game, WTS Softball Crew seemed to be a team on a mission and it showed at the plate as they posted 12 runs in a 12-5 win over Softball Soul.

 

Seven players from the WTS Softball Crew roster were named to the ASA All-Tournament first team including Natalie Betancourt, Sabrina Pimentel, Casey O’Neil, Melissa Perez, Ariana Ramirez, Shauna Fisher and Elizabeth Arnold. WTS catcher Eden Hernandez was selected to the All-Tournament second team.

 

WTS Softball Crew will now face Fraley’s Wildcats of Lexington, Ky., in a best three out of five series at the Hooters Championship Series in Oklahoma City, September 28-29 at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex. WTS is only the second team from the state of California to advance to the Hooters Championship Series in the Women’s Class C Slow Pitch division. Chucky’s Pride of San Francisco won the 2004 Women’s Class C West National Championship but lost the Hooters Championship Series 3-2 to the Yard Dawgs of Calhoun, Ga.
